Appendix: itSMF Malaysia Presenter Ethics & Guidelines (PEG)
The PEG is suggested for all itSMF Malaysia events. Although we do not strictly enforce all guidelines, we highly encourage all speakers to abide by the following guidelines to ensure a successful event:
What is acceptable:
• Introducing yourself and your company,
• Company logo, name, and slogan on introductory and concluding slides only,
• Handouts that cover your presentation should be objective,
• Discussing the advantage and disadvantages of products, services, and vendors in which you
should have NO vested interest,
• Objectively comparing approaches, techniques, and procedures, of which your product is one,
• Demonstrating your product in order to make a general point
What is deemed unacceptable:
• Promoting your company or yourself as a vendor of choice,
• Repeating the logo, name and slogan on all slides, handing out sales brochures and data sheets,
• Failing to identify any vested interest you may have in the subject or products you discuss,
• Advocating an approach for which your company or product is the only candidate,
• Using the presentation to promote sales of your product, using customer references in your presentation
Rationale:
- Many IT professionals attend various events to keep up with the latest information in the industry, therefore would like to see solutions on a neutral basis, and make comparisons of their own,
- Some vendors present in a manner that entice potential clients to their products or services; while that goal may be sound, event quality is decreased when the speaker presents information that may be biased,
- Out of consideration for your audience and the other presenters, please abide by Presenter Ethics & Guidelines,
- Please keep in mind that if attendees sense a thinly veiled sales pitch, they will be less likely to support our events.
